PECO Smart Natural Gas Conversion
Discover the benefits of clean-burning natural gas.
There’s a reason more U.S. homes heat with natural gas than all other home heating fuels combined – and why 7 out of 10 new single family homes use natural gas. Actually, there’s many reasons, but they fall into four primary categories: value, comfort, reliability and versatility.
Value
Historically, natural gas has compared favorably on cost with other home heating fuels. It also burns cleaner and more efficiently, and may help reduce your carbon footprint. Today’s gas heating systems can turn as much as 97% of your energy dollar into heat for your home. By comparison, older systems only use 65% of every energy dollar. Additionally, natural gas heating equipment costs less to maintain than other home heating equipment. With savings on energy and maintenance, coupled with rebates, discounts and eligibility for special financing, natural gas is an excellent home heating value.
Comfort
Air from a natural gas furnace is delivered at a toasty 120 degrees so it doesn’t feel cool or drafty like heated air from some other energy sources. But physical comfort is just part of it. Natural gas delivers the peace-of-mind in knowing that it’s a reliable, clean-burning fuel, almost all of which comes from North America.
RELIABILITY
Natural gas is there when you need it, without worrying about fuel deliveries. More than 99.9 percent of PECO natural gas customers had continuous service in 2008. It’s also a clean way to go.
- Natural gas burns without odor or soot.
- Natural gas eliminates the worry of troublesome oil tank leaks and messy spills.
- Natural gas produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when burned than burning heating oil. CO2 is a powerful greenhouse gas.
- Natural gas furnaces are more fuel efficient, so they use less of the Earth’s natural resources to produce the same amount of heat.
- Natural gas produces virtually no sulfur dioxide (SO2) or particulate matter when burned, thus contributing almost nothing to acid rain or smog.

Versatility
Natural gas fuels many home amenities: heating, hot water, cooking indoors and out, clothes drying, fireplaces, space heating, outdoor lighting, pool heaters and back-up power generation.
